On a Pocket Concert

“What a shame we all became, such fragile broken things. A memory remains just a tiny
spark. I give it all my oxygen, to let the flames begin. So let the flames begin”
-Let the flames begin, Paramore.

If you heard this phrase in a vivid lunchtime last September 21, 2011, then you might be listening to one of AMP’s mini concerts. The 10-minute concert set in front of Colayco Pavillion was such an eye-catcher that people passing by stopped to hear the strums, music and voices of AMP’s new roster of vocalists.

Bobbie Mabilog, the lead guitarist of the threesome who played that morning, made the hearts of all bystanders swoon with her voice and not to mention, her pink Hello Kitty guitar strap which caught my attention. Meanwhile, JL Javier, the vocalist and the egg player who looked dashing in a maroon polo shirt, made girls “kilig” when he sang “Grenade” by Bruno Mars. Lastly, Miko Velasco, the keyboardist in the trio, blushed when someone shouted, “Ang gwapo talaga ng keyboardist, oh!”

The concert which let Ateneans hear samples of AMP’s new breed of musicians was a success. The smooth vocals of JL Javier mixed with the alternative sound of Bobbie Mabilog’s guitar and Miko Velasco’s melodious and harmonic piano chords made the whole area symphonic. It was like hearing a track fresh from the recording studio.

When asked if they were a band, they replied, “No we’re not. We have no name yet if
we would. What’s your name so we can use it?” So for all who wished this trio would be a band,
send your names so they could finally have their own identity in the music scene.
